Building a Better Marriage

One of the most significant relationships one will have is marriage. It is not the only relationship that matters. Ideally, our primary relationship is with God the Father through Jesus Christ. We have the family we’re born into and great friends along the way.

But marriage is the most intimate Earthly relationship we can have. It is the relationship where both parties are on equal standing and see more of each other than anyone else. Not necessarily physically but the inner Self. Our hidden fears, vulnerabilities and insecurities. Almost everything that we cover up in front of others is exposed in front of our spouse. Marriage is designed so that only God knows more about you than your spouse.

And, more than likely, you will be with your spouse for decades. If you marry in your 20’s, that’s possibly 60 or more years. In your 40’s, 40 or more years. In your 60’s, 20 or more years. More important than the length of your years is the quality of the years.

Proverbs 21:19 says “Better to live in a wilderness than with a nagging and hot-tempered wife.” Yet a few chapters before, “A man who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD.” (Prov 18:22)

These are instructions to a son so there are no dire warnings to the wife but I think the point applies to both. Marriage can be torturous, joyful or stagnant. And even the best marriage will go through stages of each of those. But the overall quality of your marriage is something you can directly effect. Even before you say “I Do.”
